In June 2019 the Carmelites gathered together in Melbourne, from parts of Australia and Timor Leste for our Carmelite Province Chapter which is held every three years.
Father Paul Cahill, Carmelite Provincial writes on the 14th October 2020:
"When organising appointments to communities and ministries last year following the Provincial Chapter, the Provincial Council adopted a plan whereby Wayne Stanhope would be released from responsibilities as Prior and Parish Priest of Coorparoo in January 2021 in order to take up formal study to equip him as a Professional Pastoral Supervisor and move into this ministry. Consequently, I am now publicly announcing that Wayne will complete his ministry at Coorparoo in January 2021 and move to the Port Melbourne community and take up study for a Graduate Diploma in Supervision through the Jesuit Spirituality Centre, in Association with Australian Catholic University. With Wayne's move from Coorparoo, Martinho Da Costa has been appointed Prior and Parish Priest of Coorparoo as of 30th January 2021. On the same day, Januario Pinto will take up a new appointment as Assistant Priest at Wentworthville."
As you are already aware, Matthew Tonini moved to Coorparoo in October 2019 to undertake his foundational years of ordained ministry, with the guidance and support of parish teams, a professional supervisor and the Carmelite Formation Team. Matthew will remain here in ministry until at least the next Carmelite Provincial Chapter in mid-2022, when his appointment at Coorparoo will be reviewed - as will the appointment of all Carmelites in the Province, as is customary after a Chapter.
At the end of January 2021, Father Martinho Da Costa, who is currently Associate Priest in Wentworthville, New South Wales, will take up his appointment here in Coorparoo community as Parish Priest and Prior. It is hoped he will be able to spend some time in the parish toward the end of this year for a handover of responsibilities, dependent on the easing of border restrictions.
The opportunity and support given to us Carmelites, by all within the Mount Carmel community, to live and minister with authenticity and integrity is very much appreciated.
Januario and I have learnt much from you and received enormous blessings. For this we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and it is with much sadness and gratefulness that we say goodbye.
We hope we have enriched your lives here at Mount Carmel Coorparoo by our Carmelite way of life and ministry over these past years.
